Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Communications/Editor-in-Chief, oversee the writing, editing and production of BetterInvesting Magazine and other communications channels. Coordinate efforts with the freelance writers, senior management and Editor-in-Chief while, maintaining the association’s high editorial standards.

Essential Functions

­
  1. With help from a trained graphic artist, create layouts of all articles in an issue, including a variety of reoccurring columns and features. Proofread layouts.
  2. Write magazine articles along with additional collateral, press releases and other communications. Edit and proofread all communications as needed. Accuracy, clarity and professional standards are critical. 
  3. Perform complete edits of articles, including copyediting, fact-checking, rewriting, headline writing, creating supplementary information, and proofreading for BetterInvesting Magazine.
  4. Communicate with freelance writers, volunteer contributors and BetterInvesting home office staff about deadlines, changes to content and questions. Assign articles to freelancers.
  5. Layout article content into page templates, consulting with graphic designer when needed; responsible for employing computer-based applications to create production-ready materials for publication and distribution; ability to use Adobe InDesign and other Adobe Cloud features is necessary.
  6. Select appropriate art for magazine; this includes art for articles and collaborating on final cover design. Ability to work with photographs in Adobe Photoshop. 
  7. Serve as a backup to the Print Production Coordinator in communicating with printer, approving print-ready documents and resolving any issues.
  8. Ensure proper communication with BetterInvesting staff to verify the advertising needs for each issue. Coordinate advertising content in the layout of the magazine.
  9. Consult with Editor-in-Chief in planning issues and editorial calendar.
  10. Ensure the magazine meets established standards of editorial quality, style and format.
  11. Circulate written materials through established communication channels for feedback and approval.
  12. Provide graphics and content support for the creation of marketing collateral and internet assets as needed.
  13. Update the website with new images and documents.
  14. Perform additional writing and editing duties as assigned.
Allocation: BI, 100%: Editing/writing/layout of BI Magazine, 67%; marketing support, 10%; news releases, 15%; website management, 8%
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following critical skills:
  • Superior written and oral communication skills. Ability to create, compose and edit written materials at a high level.
  • High level of competency in Adobe InDesign, Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Acrobat, some Adobe Illustrator helpful. Competency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to maintain editorial and production budget and closely monitor expenses.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills. Must have memory for detail.
  • Strong interpersonal (sociability and assertiveness) skills. A team player with a strong commitment to the organization’s mission. Ability to form consensus among groups of stakeholders while maintaining editorial standards of publication.
  • Creative, innovative and visionary. Very high attention to detail, and personal standards for writing and editing.
  • Strong editorial judgment skills, as well as grammar, usage and style expertise. Excellent knowledge of AP style a must.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements. 
  • Knowledge of terms used in finance and investing. Ability to research financial statements and SEC documents.
  • Willingness to keep current with business/investing news, coupled with a strong desire to learn and support BetterInvesting’s principles.
  • The ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and the ability to prioritize daily work assignments.
  • Ability to meet printing deadlines is essential.

 


Qualifications:       Individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each of the essential duties outlined above.

Education:             Requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, business or a related field.

Experience:           Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an editorial position at a monthly, weekly or daily publication with hands-on production.
